Minimum Qualifications

  • United States Citizen
  • 21 Years Old (by Academy Graduation)
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Valid AZ Driver’s License
  • No Felony Convictions or Patterns of Criminal Conduct

    • Create an AZ POST Form ID. This number must be entered in your application.
    • Share your AZ POST Form ID with the Gilbert Police Department.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 21 years of age or greater by the completion of the police academy.
  • Must be a United States citizen prior to being appointed.
  • Vision and hearing levels as determined by an AZ POST certified physician.

Applicants who meet any of the following will be automatically disqualified by the Town of Gilbert and/or Arizona POST (Current as of 4/6/2021)

DISQUALIFIERS:

  • Felony conviction (or out-of-state conviction that would be a felony in Arizona).
  • Previous revocation/denial of AZ POST certified status, or suspension of current AZ POST certified status.
  • Currently under investigation for violations of internal policy, procedure, or other administrative guidelines.
  • Dishonorable discharge from the United States Military.
  • Conviction for domestic violence incident involving the use of force, attempted use of force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon.

DRUG USAGE:

  • Marijuana
    • Personal possession or personal use within the past two years, or at any point while appointed as a peace officer.
    • Personal sale, production, or cultivation at any time in your lifetime.
    • Professional possession, sale, production, and cultivation while employed for a licensed dispensary is not a disqualifier.
    • All forms of marijuana usage or its derivatives will be treated the same.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
    • Over-the-counter use of CBD products which contain a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) percentage of less than 0.3% is not a disqualifying factor.
    • The use of products with a THC percentage greater than 0.3% would fall under the marijuana guidelines.
  • Steroids
    • Illegal use within three (3) years prior to appointment or at any point as a peace officer.
    • All forms of steroid usage will be treated the same.
  • Adderall
    • Illegal use within three (3) years prior to appointment or at any point as a peace officer.
    • All forms of Adderall usage will be treated the same.
  • Dangerous Drugs, Narcotics, Hallucinogens, and Prescription Drugs
    • Illegal use more than five (5) times in lifetime.
    • Illegal use more than one (1) time after the age of 21.
    • Illegal use within the past seven (7) years or at any point as a peace officer.
    • Illegal sale, production, cultivation, or transport for sale at any time.
    • All usages of these types of drugs will be treated the same.

DRIVING:

  • More than one (1) DUI conviction in a lifetime
  • Any DUI convictions within the past three (3) years
  • More than eight (8) current driving points
  • More than two (2) “at fault” collisions within the past three (3) years

Minimum Required:

This examination consists of three timed exercises that are designed to measure strength and endurance. The exam includes sit-ups, push-ups, and a 1.5 mile run.  Below shows the minimum requirements.  It is recommended applicant’s be able to do more than the minimum required to ensure they are able to pass the exam:

  • Sit Ups: 36 (within 1 minute)
  • Push Ups: 20 (untimed)
  • 1.5 Mile Run: 15:48 minutes

Here are some tips we recommend helping you succeed in taking the physical fitness test:

  • Get a physician’s exam prior to the test to identify any possible health issues.  Explain your intentions to your doctor and ask for his/her honest opinion as to your general ability to do high stress exercises.  Regardless of the answer, you will be better educated as to what your limitations are.
  • Begin a fitness program as soon as possible.  The program should include aerobic exercise, such as running or bicycling, as well as some light weightlifting to increase strength.  If you’re new to routine exercise, consult a fitness trainer for a routine that will help you achieve your goals.  Before and after your workouts, spend extra time stretching out; flexibility is a key to doing well on these tests.
  • The night prior to your test, eat a meal high in carbohydrates.  Potatoes or pasta would be good examples.  Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they tend to dehydrate your body.  Also, begin drinking water and over-hydrating your system.  Many applicants suffer from dehydration because they forget this simple rule of life in the desert.  Don’t forget to bring water and fruit to the test for extra energy if you need it.
  • Wear light fitness clothing.  Supportive “sport type” undergarments are encouraged.
  • Arrive at the test site early.  This will give you extra time to warm up and stretch.
  • You may also consider having a friend drive you to and from the test.  Driving can be difficult and annoying when you’re physically exhausted.  Remember to bring your driver’s license for proper identification.
  • Finally, be friendly and encouraging to your co-applicants.  Remember, good attitudes and teamwork go far in law enforcement.

Out of State Applicant Information

Testing Process

Out of state applicants should anticipate traveling to Arizona during the hiring process (this does not include the initial travel to complete the in-person physical fitness test).

After passing the online written test via the National Testing Network and physical fitness test, a background investigator will contact you. Your background investigator will work with you to schedule the remaining in-person tests.

Police Officer Recruit

In Arizona, you are paid while you attend the police academy, which is approximately 22 weeks. Gilbert PD compensates you at the full starting officer rate (please see the Compensation and Benefits section). The academy is 40 hours/week and is non-residential. All required uniforms and gear are provided by the Gilbert Police Department.
